PROPER STUFF ABOUT COUNTY MEATH County Meath (Contae An Mhí in Irish) is a county in the Republic of Ireland, often informally called The Royal County. The de facto capital is Navan ("An Uaimh" in Irish, meaning "The Cave"), where the county hall and government is located, although Trim has a historical significance, including the location of the circuit court, Norman castle and Anglo-Norman parliament. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Meath seat was located in Navan until a backlash occurred against the Bishop of Meath. It is now located in Mullingar, County Westmeath. Other major towns include Ashbourne and Kells with its round tower and monastic past. Slane is well known both for its castle, and the occasional rock concerts. Meath (the "middle") was once a province of Ireland in its own right, but now forms part of Leinster, historically this province of Meath included all of the current county as well as all of Westmeath and parts of Cavan, Dublin, Kildare, Longford, Louth and Offaly. The High King of Ireland sat at Tara in Meath. The confluence of the River Blackwater (flowing south east from Virginia Lake and the famous River Boyne) occurs in Navan. Situated in the famous Boyne Valley the town is close to Brú na Bóinne (Newgrange, Knowth & Dowth), the Hill of Tara, Skryne and Slane, as well as the heritage towns of Kells and Trim. Famouse people from Co. Meath Saint Seachnall Dunshaughlin takes its name from Saint Seachnall, the son of Saint Patrick's sister, Dareca, who had a church here at one time. (Who would’ve guessed that St. Patrick had a sister!?) Saint Seachnall accompanied Saint Patrick when he went on his missions and he became a Bishop in 439 AD, probably being consecrated in France or England. For a time he was in charge of the See of Armagh, but his own diocese was Dunshaughlin. He is believed to be the first bishop who died in Ireland. Set in masonry beside the Protestant Church here, there is a very old sculptured stone, carved with a representation of the launching at the Crucifixion. In the porch there is a chart giving "The Unbroken Line" of the pastors of the parish from Saint Patrick in 432 AD to John McClenaghan, 1905. Sir Francis Beaufort The Irish-British hydrographer Rear Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort was born in Navan in Ireland. His father was a cleric of Huguenot origin who took an active interest in geography and topography, publishing in 1792 one of the earliest detailed maps of Ireland. Beaufort joined the East India Company in 1789 and enlisted in the Royal Navy the following year, remaining on active service until 1812. He proposed, in 1806, the wind scale named for him. This was an objective scale ranging from calm (0) up to storm (13) in which wind strength was correlated with the amount of sail a full-rigged ship would carry appropriate to the wind conditions. It was first used officially by Robert Fitzroy in 1831 and adopted by the British Admiralty in 1838. When sail gave way to steam the scale was modified by defining levels on it in terms of the state of the sea or, following George Simpson, wind speed. In 1812 Beaufort surveyed and charted the Turkish coast, later writing his account of the expedition, “Karamania” (1817). He was appointed Hydrographer to the Royal Navy in 1829. In this office Beaufort commissioned voyages to survey and chart areas of the world, such as those of the Beagle with Charles Darwin and the Erebus with Joseph Hooker. The sea north of Alaska was named for him. Pierce Brosnan Brosnan was born in County Meath, Ireland, and moved to London with his family when he was 11. At the age of 20 he enrolled in drama school. While living in London he performed in several West End stage productions including Franco Zeffirelli's Fulimena and Tennessee Williams' The Red Devil Battery Sign as well as Malcolm Taylor's Wait Until Dark at The York Theater Royal. Before landing the role as James Bond, Brosnan achieved worldwide recognition as investigator Remington Steele on the popular television series of the same name.
